Here’s Why You Should Never Base Your Weight Loss on Instagram Influencers’ Strategies and Results
If you’re like a lot of people, you have an Instragram account, and you probably follow a wide range of people, from your close friends and family to your favorite celebs, and maybe even some influencers who have made their fame on the social media platform by giving tips and advice on myriad topics.
Despite the wide array of influencers on Instagram, though, should you really be following them and taking them seriously? Well, according to Huffpost, the simple answer to this question is: No.
First Off, They Might Be Lying
One thing to remember is that some Instagram influencers have been caught lying about their diet, weight loss and lifestyle. So, even though someone says that they’re following a very specific eating plan, and that they have achieved amazing health and weight loss benefits as a result of their diet, they may very well be eating cheeseburgers and French fries when they aren’t on camera.
Influencers Might Make You Feel Worse About Yourself and Your Weight Loss
Another thing to consider is that body image issues might arise by following Instagram influencers who can make you feel guilty about your weight loss, the way you eat and the way that you live your life. If someone else is able to eat nothing but raw fruits and vegetables all day every day, why can’t you, you might ask yourself.
Over time, you might try to follow the same lifestyle, falter, and really get down on yourself as a result. And, let’s face it, our culture is challenging enough to deal with when it comes to body image, so there’s no reason to make things harder on yourself.
It’s All So Fear-Based
Other reasons why it’s best to avoid following an Instragram influencer too closely for weight loss and taking them too seriously:
- They can give advice that is actually bad for your unique body.
- They can make you feel bad about the way that you look if you feel like you aren’t skinny enough because the influencers are so thin.
- They can encourage you to spend money on expensive products that aren’t worth it at all.
The biggest reason why you shouldn’t take what influencers say too seriously: they probably aren’t real experts. If you need advice about how to lose weight, overcoming a weight loss plateau or getting in shape, it’s best to consult with your physician or a nutritionist.
