What are some natural remedies for Rheumatoid Arthritis?
Doctors prefer in most cases the hot/cold treatment to reduce RA symptoms. There is also magnetic therapy which is proven to work for osteoarthritis, however researchers are still unsure if it is useful for RA patients. Some people prefer mind/body therapy, which has been proven helpful for RA symptoms-as well as heart conditions, stress, anger management, and people with conditions affecting the nervous system. Low impact exercises, included in mind/body therapy, that are useful for people with RA are yoga and Tai Chi. Additionally, there are a couple supplements on the market that are both natural and effective remedies for Rheumatoid Arthritis.
The natural hot/cold therapy is a popular recommendation for RA. It works by reducing inflammation and therefore reducing pain, first you would use a cold compress and apply it for no more than 15 minutes to the affected area, this will reduce inflammation and swelling. Be sure to wait 30 minutes between hot and cold treatments. Next you will apply a hot treatment with either a hot compress, a moist heating pad, warm damp towels, microwaveable hot packs, or even a hot shower will do. Heat relaxes your muscles and stimulates blood flow, however when using heat make sure not to go too hot. The skin shouldn’t burn.
Magnet therapy has been proven to work with patients with osteoarthritis, but not yet proven effective with RA. Before ruling magnet therapy out though, magnets have been proven in many studies to reduce pain, inflammation, and discomfort in many people with a variety of conditions. How magnets work to do this is unclear, but it has become very popular for a reason, because it works. Also, being that you only have to wear them, it’s very convenient, easy, and effective. Magnet bracelets, necklaces, and rings can be found in many health food and department stores.
Mind/body therapy covers an array of things including meditation, Tai Chi, yoga, deep breathing exercises, and visualization techniques. Meditation helps to reduce stress on both mind and body in studies, reducing inflammation and joint pain. Tai chi and yoga are low impact exercises that involve deep breathing and stretching, making it a very effective way to improve RA and other types of arthritis. Deep abdominal breathing is both important for mind/body health and the treatment of many health conditions. Deep breathing can be done sitting or laying down. Wear comfortable clothes, and clear your mind. Visualize a string pulling up your chest and pulling it farther from your belly, you should feel your abdomen elongating, your posture correcting. Keep good posture while you put a hand on the abdomen near your belly button, and begin breathing in through your nose. Then slowly and evenly breath out through your mouth. Do this a few breaths at a time.
