This was found in six different studies that have all been published in the Psychological Science journal.
Within the studies, the scientists requested that over 1,200 people in China, Canada, France, South Korea, and the United States reveal the factor that they feel is contributing the most to being overweight. They also took the weight and height measurements of those participants in order to be able to calculate their BMIs. The people who said that failure to stay active is the largest one leading to obesity tended to be the ones who had the largest BMI when compared to those who felt that not eating properly was the key.
The researchers felt that the perception that people have about controlling their weight helps to influence the food choices that they are making. In two of the studies, when the participants were offered an unlimited amount of chocolate from the researchers, the people who felt that exercising was the key to proper body weight maintenance were the ones who ate the most.
