As someone who is interested in all things health related, I started thinking: what can I do to ensure the long-term health of my eyes? I already wear contact lenses, and I know that my eyes will change as I get older. After all, whose parents haven’t had to get reading glasses in their senior years?

After talking to my eye doctor at my last eye exam, and after doing some of my own research, I came up with a list of the most important eye health nutrients. These are the nutrients that I am now focusing on getting through my diet and through daily supplementation. 

Vitamin A 

Vitamin A is found in a lot of multi-vitamin/mineral supplements, so if you are like me and you are already taking one every day to fill nutritional gaps in your diet, you are headed in the right direction. You can also get a lot of vitamin A through the foods that you eat, especially if you stock your kitchen with plenty of carrots, sweet potatoes, dark leafy greens, squash, apricots, red peppers, cantaloupe, tropical fruits, and citrus fruits. Overall, this nutrient is known for helping your entire body stay healthy, but when it comes to your eyes, if can actually help with your night vision.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a really potent antioxidant, which will boost the strength of your immune system and fight off free radicals that can do a lot of damage and cause a lot of health problems in the long run. Getting enough vitamin C can even help reduce your risk of developing cataracts, which is a common eye problem amongst the elderly. You can supplement with vitamin C, get it in your daily multi-vitamin/mineral supplement, and even get it through foods like red and green peppers, kale, oranges, strawberries, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, guava, kiwi, and grapefruit. Vitamin E

Another vitamin that can help reduce your risk of developing cataracts as you get older is vitamin E. Yet again, this is an easy supplement to get, as it is found in multi-vitamin/mineral formulas, and you can also buy extra vitamin E supplements to ensure you are getting enough. In terms of diet, eating more spinach, almonds, avocados, sweet potatoes, sunflower seeds, butternut squash, and olive oil will also help naturally boost your vitamin E intake on a daily basis.

Lutein and Zeaxanthin

Okay, these two nutrients are a little harder to come by. They often are not found in your standard multi-vitamin/mineral supplement, and it can be difficult to get the right balance through your diet. Classified as carotenoids, these two supplements will work together to reduce your risk of both cataracts and macular degeneration, which is a major cause of blindness. Eating plenty of leafy greens, such as kale, spinach, collard greens, romaine lettuce, and turnip greens, and also making it a point to eat more zucchini, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, peas, and eggs will help you get more lutein and zeaxanthin from your diet.


Selenium is an important mineral when it comes to your eye health, so it is important to maintain the right amount in your body at all times. This nutrient can protect the retina and fight the development of glaucoma, which is another common eye problem that often strikes as people get older. Even though there are treatment options, if glaucoma develops and is not treated promptly, it could end up doing damage to the ocular nerve and cause irreversible vision loss. In addition to supplementation, if you want to get more selenium through your diet, it is possible. Foods that are naturally high in selenium include spinach, eggs, chicken, beef liver, turkey, grass-fed beef, yellowfin tuna, sardines, halibut, and Brazil nuts. As you can see, if you are a vegetarian or a vegan, it can be much harder to get enough selenium, making supplementation even more important.


Another important mineral when it comes to eye health is zinc, as it can defend against macular degeneration and help your body absorb vitamin A, which is another nutrient that will help support your eye health. Avoid foods that are high in cholesterol, sugar, and salt, and focus on consuming more whole food ingredients that are organic and packed with nutrients that your entire body, including your eyes, will be able to use.
